City in the Sky #8

The wooden door creaked as Susan pushed it open. The trainer immediately felt warm air from inside the cabin hit her, which was actually quite the relief. She and her pokemon, Harold, had been helping out in the extremely cold city of Wintervale. With the hooticham needing a break from flying supplies up to the city it was the perfect opportunity to warm up.

The two found that the cabin was pretty packed with other people. Part of the city’s current troubles involved a lack of heat, which as one could imagine was extremely problematic in such a cold environment. With only a limited amount of buildings having heat the citizens and helpers had to pack as many in as possible.

“Sorry but I don’t think there’s enough room, you can rest in your pokeball.” Susan said to Harold as she held out his pokeball. After a few seconds the hooticham disappeared into the pokeball. Now that her pokemon was warm in his pokeball the old woman sat down on the floor. She was grateful when some nearby people offered her a cushion to sit on. She was far too old for sitting on a bare wooden floor.

After she felt some time warming up and felt that Harold had enough time to rest Susan got up and headed back out into the cold. She took the pokeball again and tossed it in the air, allowing Harold to appear in front of her.

The two headed back over to the supply stash and Susan found another crate for Harold to carry. The pile of supplies had begun to dwindle as other flying pokemon helped carry it up to the city but there was still plenty that needed transport.

Harold grabbed the rope with his talon as he beat his wings and began to fly upwards. Now that he had done a few trips to and from the floating city the pokemon was feeling a lot more confident. His well needed break also gave him a new burst of energy.

However, the pokemon’s confidence proved to actually be a hindrance in the next few moments. Feeling so confident in his ability the hooticham had failed to properly take in his surroundings. This left him flying almost straight into a large corviknight that was carrying a very heavy metal box filled with items.

Harold let out a startled noise as he flapped his wings the other direction. He was just barely able to avoid flying into the corviknight, who was now giving him a rather judgemental look. The real problem was that this caused Harold to lose his grip on the crate’s rope. He looked down to see the crate hurtling towards the ground.

People and pokemon on the ground scattered as some of the workers shouted warnings. The crate was gaining speed as it fell until it slammed against the ground. The wood splintered and exploded outwards as the crate was completely destroyed. The electronic equipment that was inside the crate also broke into pieces in the fall.

There were some helpers that had only just barely managed to avoid being crushed by the crate. They were now staring at it with a rather shaken look as Susan hurried over.

Harold landed on the ground as workers came over to do damage control. The electronics were now completely unusable, even for spare parts. Considering the distance of the fall there was now hardly anything left. Susan immediately checked over her pokemon, relieved to see that he was perfectly fine.

“I’m so sorry about that.” Susan apologized to the nearby workers, who all looked rather irritated as they murmured amongst themselves. After a few moments of discussion one of the workers stepped forward. Based on his different colored hard hat Susan assumed that he must be some kind of team lead or manager.

“I think maybe it’s best if we find another task for you.” He said gruffly, scratching his head as he looked at the carnage. Susan nodded, a bit embarrassed from her pokemon unintentionally creating quite the scene. Although, she could never really blame Harold for this.

The worker waved down a nearby director who seemed to be arranging tasks. They whispered to each other for a few moments as the director nodded, her expression remaining rather neutral.

“The only other thing we really need help with right now is fixing some of the technology.” The director explained as she walked towards Susan. The woman then pointed up at the pyramid at the bottom of the city.

“Uhm… I’m afraid I wouldn’t be any help with that.” Susan replied with a chuckle. She had absolutely no experience with such complicated electronics, let alone fixing them.

“Maybe it’s best if you come back another day…” The director sighed as she looked between the old woman and Harold.
